Volkswagen and Mazda have made the latest announcement in a long series of recalls caused by faulty Takata airbag inflators.

Volkswagen is recalling about 680,000 vehicles that contain faulty driver's side airbags that use non-desiccated SDI and PSDI-5 inflators from Takata. In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the air bag cushion material, which may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants.

The recalled vehicles are from the following models and years:

  • 2006-2010 Passat Sedan and Wagon (German Production)
  • 2012-2014 Eos
  • 2010-2014 Golf
  • 2010-2014 Jetta SportWagen
  • 2012-2014 Passat (U.S. Production)
  • 2009-2014 CC

Once the affected vehicle identification numbers (VIN) and the recall remedy have been identified, Volkswagen will notify all owners of affected vehicles and will instruct them to arrange for an appointment with an authorized Volkswagen dealer.

Mazda's announcement applies to all 2004–2006 model year B-Series Trucks with Takata driver-side frontal air bag inflators. About 19,000 are included.

There have been no reports of accidents or injuries on the Mazda-badged vehicles subject to this recall.

Owners with questions about these recalls can contact Jeannine Ginivan of Volkswagen at (703) 364-7816 and Tamara Mlynarczyk of Mazda at (202) 467-5092.
