Volkswagen Recall Includes More Than 71,000 Passat Vehicles with Defective Air Bags

During a crash, the air bag inflator could explode with metal fragments striking vehicle occupants

May 3, 2018

Volkswagen (VW) is recalling more than 71,000 model year 2006-2007 Passat sedan and wagon vehicles.

What's the problem?

Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the air bag inflator to explode.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants—potentially resulting in serious injuries or even death.

What happens next?

Owners of the recalled Passat sedan and wagon vehicles will be notified by Volkswagen beginning in late April 2018. VW dealers will then replace the front driver air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge.
