VW Passat, Jetta, Golf, and EuroVan Vehicles Recalled Due to Risk of Exploding Air Bags

Excessive pressure may cause the air bag inflator to explode, with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants

July 2, 2018

Volkswagen (VW) is recalling certain model year 2003 Volkswagen Passat sedan, Jetta, Jetta wagon, Golf, EuroVan, EuroVan Camper Van, and EuroVan Chassis vehicles.

What's the problem?

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag on these vehicles, excessive internal pressure may cause the air bag inflator to explode, with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. This could result in serious injury, or even death.

What happens next?

Owners of the recalled Passat, Jetta, Golf, and EuroVan vehicles will be notified by Volkswagen in mid-August 2018. Local VW dealers will then replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator free of charge.

Vehicle owners with any questions about this recall or the repair process should contact Volkswagen customer service at (800) 893-5298. Provide recall reference number 69X3.
